Terra Nova

Richly woven of fine threads that mingle and separate, surface and disappear, this poetic documentary studies the works of one of Canada's greatest contemporary etchers: Newfoundland-born David Blackwood. The artist himself guides the viewer through a step-by-step explanation of the entire etching process. Scenes of his hometown outport, examples of his masterfully crafted prints, and the vivid tales of an old mariner recall the tragic seal hunts and a way of life that has now vanished.

Island of Birds (2 min.): Camera close-ups on Green Island near Newfoundland. Caplin Harvest (2 min.): Silvery caplin wash ashore, making an easy catch for fishermen. Outports on the Move (4 min.): House after house is floated to the Newfoundland mainland, where schools, hospitals, stores and services are available.

An account of the Newfoundland fishing industry, showing equipment and methods of fishing, is presented. The film also documents the processing and marketing of fish. A record of the problems confronting fishermen in Newfoundland during the past, it also serves as a comparison with present-day Newfoundland fishing.
