Minotaur

Un spectre coloré d'émotions universelles. Une multitude d'images 3D marquant un aller-retour entre naissance et mort. Ainsi commence Minotaur. L'animateur et artiste visuel lauréat Munro Ferguson s'inspire ici du film révolutionnaire d'Expo 67 Dans le labyrinthe, lequel explorait diverses versions du voyage du héros mythique. Minotaur propulse le spectateur parmi une série de sensations fortes alors que ce héros traverse les sept étapes du parcours classique. Un foisonnement de couleurs illustre chaque séquence narrative : naissance, enfance, jeunesse, isolement, confrontation, bataille, mort et renaissance. Minotaur a été créé avec l'outil d'animation stéréoscopique Sandde, un logiciel de dessin en 3D permettant à l'artiste de manipuler ses croquis dans l'espace à l'aide d'un crayon-lecteur innovateur. Ferguson a choisi cette méthode parce qu'elle lui offre la possibilité de faire entrer - littéralement - le spectateur dans le récit. La trame sonore obsédante et contemporaine du réputé compositeur canadien Kid Koala accentue la quête de rédemption du héros.

To Oedipus, women are an enigma. Why, with her bothersome husband finally out of the way, did his mistress inexplicably run off? Don't lose your head, thinks Oedipus. Just try to understand. And so the valiant young milkman embarks on an introspective journey, a process of self-discovery and regression in which he retraces the path of his life. Parodying the Greek myth, and throwing in a bunch of well-known NFB animated characters for good measure, director Paul Driessen offers up a backwards tragicomic version of the classic tale. Oedipus is Driessen at his absurdist best.

Set to a rollicking doo-wop song by Canadian songwriter Zander Ary, the animated short Soup of the Day tells the amusing story of the dilemma a husband and wife face every time they go out to eat. Will their culinary differences douse the flames of romance, or will love prevail? Director Lynn Smith brings her gouache paintings to life, animating "directly under the camera", and serving up a tour de force of storytelling in song-a tasty comic narrative that bops along with an array of tantalizing dishes. Vocalists Susie Arioli and Alexander (Zander) Ary each bring a unique interpretation to this funny, loving song, and add a dash of tenderness to the colourful animated couple.
